At 21, and desperate for excitement, I moved to the big smoke of London to commence my nurse training. Three years later, fuelled by parties, unsuitable boyfriends and more beer than you could shake a stick at, I qualified as a staff nurse and rather than apply for jobs, I ditched the uniform and took off on an Asian adventure with yet another boyfriend. (This one would become a fiance but not the man I actually married.. I just like collecting engagement rings) After a romp through the islands and highlands of Thailand, Malaysia and Nepal, we settled into a kind of dullness which inevitabley ended a few years later.

A few boyfriends later (some worse than others) and a lot of parties and bottles of wine later, I finally found myself in a new flat in Brighton nursing a broken heart,. (Another boyfriend had bitten the dust) I had always wanted children but I couldn't seem to find my Mr Right, someone who 'got' me and who also wanted to have children with me.

One particular night, I was at a night club in Brighton where I got chatting to a drunken buffoon. The buffoon and I ended up in a hotel linen cupboard that night. A long story but it's not what you think(!) Our strange experience ensured a repeat date was on the cards, despite him living in a different county about 150 miles away, That was 10 years ago and, since then, we have travelled some more, Europe, New Zealand, China and Lyme Regis :) Never one to rush into anything he finally (10 months after the twinnies were born), dropped down on one knee in a field in Somerset and popped the question. We were married last year on an idyllic Greek island with our two beautiful pumpkins as bridesmaids...

Of course our journey was not easy. 'TTC' or 'trying to conceive' took me over as a person for many years.. Hours and hours were spent on the internet searching for the answers. I was one of the lucky ones in that I did find a few answers and it seems like what I was putting into my body contributed heavily in my inability to conceive (I was diagnosed with coeliac disease and now follow a strict Gluten-free diet).

I was lucky to be able to take the first year off with the girls and now I am back at work, just two days a week but I love it. I work in a Genito-urinary medicine clinic, or to the layman, the 'Clap' clinic. This has been terrific for me to 'keep my hand in (Sometimes literally!) and the girls have really benefited from spending a couple of days a week at nursery.
When I get the chance (rarely) I ponder what on earth did I do with my time before I had children? and hand on heart, I have no idea. I guess I sat around and thought a lot, perhaps read books and painted my toenails, drank whole cups of tea and used the toilet in peace, had lazy lie-ins, recovered from hangovers and flicked through trashy mags, long dog walks and Jenga in the pub...... ah! I remember now! Would I go back to those days? Not on your life! I love being a mum. It's hard work and stressful, it's the relentless work of a headless chicken. I find my belongings stuffed down the toilet and pushed through the letterbox, but the rewards are immeasurable. The innocent wonder that lights up their faces when they are discovering the big wide world, the kisses and cuddles, the singing and giggles.... I feel like the luckiest woman alive. simples.

My Pregnancy Story:

After two rounds of IVF using Donor sperm we had finally got our positive result, overjoyed does not even begin to describe how we were feeling.

Teresal's Story My IVF story can be found here

Bringing a child into the world is one of the most rewarding things you will ever do. It could also be one of the most life changing experiences you will ever have. Throughout your pregnancy you will go through all sorts of physical and emotional changes as you and your body prepare for the arrival of your little bundle of joy. It is a magical time.

On the 12th November 2009 we had three embryos transferred (graded “8C3-3, 8C3-2 and 6C3-2”) and were basically told not to get our hopes up as these embryos where not the best and a bit “grainy” (whatever that meant), anyway we proved them wrong when we tested at home with the good old Clear Blue Digital Pregnancy test on the 23rd November 2009, we could not believe what we were seeing, yes it really said pregnant, after the initial tears of joy the shock settled in and the reality was the we could actually have anything from one child to three (or six after some wise person indicated that they could divide) inside me.

We travelled to our clinic on the 26th November 2009 to get a blood test done and then had to come home and await the phone call, even though we had done the test ourselves we now had the awful dread that it wasn’t correct and that the clinic would phone and say sorry it’s a negative, god how that day dragged, at 3.06pm the phone rang and they confirmed that we had a positive and it was a good strong result.

We had to then wait (again) another three weeks for my scan, which would make me 7 weeks exactly, every day was a drag but a day closer to the scan.

The 17th December 2009 eventually came, we were extremely nervous on that drive to the clinic that morning, I felt so sick with worry.

We were taken into the scan room where I was given an internal scan, after the sonographer had a good look she pointed to a little blob and said there it is and there is only the one, relief to see my blob and even more that there was only the one, the smile on our faces was unreal, she then hit a button and the sound was amazing thump thump thump, there that’s your baby you can hear, I’m afraid that’s when I totally lost it and the tears came and they came hard, I was sobbing with such joy, I wanted to hear that sound every minute of every day until he/she arrived, unfortunately that wasn’t going to be the case and we were given a picture and lots if congratulations and sent on our way.

The day after the scan I had made an appointment to see my GP to get it made all official, she was so pleased for us (and probably glad that she was eventually seeing the back of me) and she made the arrangements to contact the midwife for our booking in appointment.

My midwife visited the house on the 30th December 2009 to do our booking in appointment, lots of paperwork to fill in; Chris and I had decided to let them know that we had used donor sperm so that they would know that any medical conditions in the future could not be related to him.

The 5th January 2010 we had our next scan, I was then 10 weeks pregnant, no morning sickness, in fact apart from the cold I felt fine, no symptoms at all of being pregnant, the scan was great and we could now see that now it wasn’t just a blob it was in fact a baby (maybe more like a tadpole), all fine with baby, measurements where spot on, since I was very nervous with this pregnancy the midwife arranged another scan in four weeks.

The weeks passed slowly, I had started to have regular nosebleeds and I was a bit concerned, I spoke to my midwife who reassured that this is quite common in early pregnancy due to something with the placenta pumping the blood but she did suggest seeing my GP to get some blood taken to rule out that I wasn’t becoming anaemic. I was also given the swine flu injection this week.

The 2nd February eventually arrived and off we went for another scan, yet again I was full of cold but otherwise all was fine, the nosebleeds had eased off and thankfully I wasn’t anaemic. Scan went fine; baby definitely a baby now and continued to measure fine.

On week sixteen I had more bloods taken to check for Downs Syndrome, Spina Bifida and Williams Syndrome, quite nervous about this due to my age (41), I also heard the heartbeat, this sound will always be the best sound in the world and looking back I wish that I had taped it as a momento for the future.

Week seventeen (23rd February 2010) our blood results came back and we are high risk for Downs Syndrome, the national average is 1-88 and we were 1-119 this is considered high risk and we have been scheduled for another scan tomorrow and to discuss options with our consultant.

24th February 2010, dreaded scan day, after a sleepless night we arrived at the hospital very scared, the scan went well and our consultant could not see any visible signs of Downs Syndrome. We had already made the decision before we arrived that we wouldn’t have the amniocentesis done as the risk of miscarriage is 1-100 and even if the result was positive for Downs Syndrome then we would never terminate anyway so what was the point in risking a miscarriage.

24th March 2010, detailed scan day, this was the one where we would get good pictures of our baby, very excited at this prospect. This scan was really good until the sonographer said that she thought she could see a problem with the kidneys (a condition called Antenatal Detected Renal Pyelectasis) Antenatally Detected Pyelectasis link, we were taken into a room to await the consultant, he explained that there could be another reason that the kidneys didn’t look quite right and that could be that baby was either due to have a wee or in the process of doing a wee, we are to be scanned again at 34 weeks (seems such a long time away, I mean 14 weeks that’s a lifetime isn’t it).

At 22 weeks I was having a lot of pain in my left side and across the top of my tummy, phoned the midwife and was sent to the maternity assessment unit to get checked over, baby was fine, heart beating away quite happily (140bpm), the pain is probably caused by muscles stretching and possibly me carrying hoover upstairs and hovering the whole house opps.

Week 23, yet more drama here, I have a urine infection and have been feeling absolutely rubbish, I am exhausted with having to constantly go to the toilet, not been given antibiotics but have to drink loads to flush it out.

Week 24, whhhhoooopppppy I have at last felt this baby move, very gentle and a weird sensation but defiantly movements, a bit like butterflies and some popping bubbles. I am so happy.

Week 26, Chris has finally felt the baby kick, this baby is a tinker, it could be doing a dance in there but as soon as Chris puts his hand on my belly it would just stop, quite funny but very nice for him to actually feel it at last.

Week 34, the dreaded scan to see how the baby’s kidneys are now, in fact I haven’t really thought much about it for a while, been far too busy decorating the nursery and buying equipment and clothes. The scan was however brilliant, there was no evidence of anything being wrong with the kidneys, we are very happy parents indeed, was lovely to see baby again.

Week 37, after my midwife check they now thing baby is breech, however the following day whilst drinking a cup of tea there was a huge movement in my belly (actually felt sick) and baby has definitely turned.

Week 38, scan with consultant; baby is definitely head down, not engaged but down, that’s heading the right way for me.

Week 40, my actual due date 2nd August 2010, seen my consultant today and he has decided that I am very low in amniotic fluid and wants me induced on the 4th August 2010.

This story continues in Teresal's Birth Story , I hope I haven’t bored you to death reading this.

My Pregnancy Story:

After two rounds of IVF using Donor sperm we had finally got our positive result, overjoyed does not even begin to describe how we were feeling.

/ Teresal's Story My IVF story can be found here

This scan was really good until the sonographer said that she thought she could see a problem with the kidneys (a condition called Antenatal Detected Renal Pyelectasis) / Antenatally Detected Pyelectasis link, we were taken into a room to await the consultant, he explained that there could be another reason that the kidneys didn’t look quite right and that could be that baby was either due to have a wee or in the process of doing a wee, we are to be scanned again at 34 weeks (seems such a long time away, I mean 14 weeks that’s a lifetime isn’t it).

Week 34, the dreaded scan to see how the baby’s kidneys are now, in fact I haven’t really thought much about it for a while, been far too busy decorating the nursery and buying equipment and clothes.

This scan was really good until the sonographer said that she thought she could see a problem with the kidneys (a condition called Antenatal Detected Renal Pyelectasis), we were taken into a room to await the consultant, he explained that there could be another reason that the kidneys didn’t look quite right and that could be that baby was either due to have a wee or in the process of doing a wee, we are to be scanned again at 34 weeks (seems such a long time away, I mean 14 weeks that’s a lifetime isn’t it).

This story continues in my birth story, I hope I haven’t bored you to death reading this.
Bringing a child into the world is one of the most rewarding things you will ever do. It could also be one of the most life changing experiences you will ever have.

My Pregnancy Story:

After two rounds of IVF using Donor sperm we had finally got our positive result, overjoyed does not even begin to describe how we were feeling.

My ivf story

My Pregnancy Story:

After two rounds of IVF using Donor sperm we had finally got our positive result, overjoyed does not even begin to describe how we were feeling.

Our IVF story is in another thread.

The space center is a fabulous place and very educational,So I would say it's best for children of 8 years and older, but my 6 and 2 year old enjoyed it much the same.

There are some dressing up clothes to get the kids involved, as you can see from my cheeky photo of the kids.

It isn't that big,but very surprising what is there;from weather stations to real life size space shuttles, planets and solar systems, and the Sir Patrick Moore Planetarium.

Jake enjoyed playing in the space shuttle, where he had to follow orders given by us in the command center;"systems check, engage and lift off" with a big bang and puff of smoke!

As for Jessica she just enjoyed running around pretending to be an alien.
Very small and hidden enclosures,so we didn't see half the animals,The Penguins were on holiday so not even there, this was during a refurbishment of their enclosure.

The famous red Panda, you have to pay extra to see.

The tigers, lions and Jaguars were pacing up and down and seemed to be unhappy.

So not somewhere I will be going back to unfortunately.

Well what can I say other than WOW,it is amazing and worth every penny spent to get in; I've been to many zoo's around England and this one is by far the best. Also very pram friendly.

When you first enter you are straight away met by the Elephants (I'M sure you can now see these without purchasing entry tickets ),you can get really close up to the enclosure which i'm glad to say is quite some size and full of fresh shrubs and tree branches for them to chew their way through.Close to the Elephants was a sheltered seating area with all their names and ages on.

The monkey's were next on my fab favorites, they are just ace and so funny. There are a few different types of Monkey enclosures;the monkey house and the outdoor area both being my favorite, both having excellent viewing area's.

The monkey house was so funny to walk around, but very busy so be patient if you want a turn at the viewing windows. The monkeys would come right up to the glass and mimic you, pull their tongue out, wave and clap their hands;they are so bloody clever. The outdoor enclosure area was huge with massive tree's, climbing frames and ropes to entertain them.

There is also a Bat house, which is not for easily scared children.Whilst following a slightly lit pathway you can walk through the Bat housing area, they are free to fly around as it is kept very dark in here,so they believe it's night time.Swooping down and around your head and the squeak of the them communicating is amazing to witness but also a bit daunting.
During the first few years we enjoyed going out for lots of drives,Especially to Malton and Pickering area of North Yorkshire and also spent many nights in Scarborough one of our local seaside resorts. We went on a few holidays together to Turkey;"Oh how I loved Turkey",We also went once to Kavos in Corfu, But that was a disaster.Football season and Kavos just don't mix well if you don't do football and can't quite understand the hype around kicking a ball lol.

Just after we got married in 2004,we purchased a caravan and spent most of our time there, We would leave work on a Sunday morning and head up to the campsite and stay there till we was due back at work on the Wednesday evening ( we work the dead mans shift known as nights ).We would meet up with friends at the site and enjoy our nights in the clubhouse, drinking way too much beer and playing way too much pool.

Since becoming parents all this has changed,We still work the dead mans shift, Which is great as we only need childcare on a Wednesday night and the kids go to my mums, I don't think she would have it any other way now.
On our days off we love to spend time with the kids and always try to do something special at the weekends, most of the time we end up at the seaside, splish splashing in the sea, digging in the sand and spending lots of 2p in the amusements.

Dinosaur Adventure,Norfolk
We visited Dinosaur Adventure about 2 years ago when our son was about 4 years old.
After a hectic journey getting there due to Jake being very ill with travel sickness, I'm glad to say we had a fabulous time.

When you first get there and pay for your entrance you are giving a Dino card, whilst you're walking around you have to look out for the Dinosaurs on the card and mark them off,Some of these Dinosaurs are huge and a little bit scary ( like the T REX ).If you get all of them you get a medal at the end for the children to wear with pride.

There are lots of things to do here,We enjoyed the big dig area where you have to use the brushes to discover what lies beneath the sand, and Jake loved the mini golf course.Being a boy he also loved the Animal area where he could hold a giant Snail and a Millipede; Plenty of washing facilities thankfully to wash them sticky hands afterwards.

Some of the other things to do are, pedal car races, big play ground, small animal barn, assault course and a maze.

Take a picnic with you as there's some lovely sheltered spots under the trees to roll out a big blanket, saving you some pennies from eating in the cafe. The only downside to it was you have to go out via the shop,so expect to empty your purse in here!.

This is a fabulous piece of equipment
Plain and simple, its probably the best "toy" we bought for our son when he was younger...

The age range is advised from 6 months to 15 months or a weight of 11kgs and height of 85cms.

We bought ours second hand for £45 and we were a little sceptical as to how much it would be used, but we shouldn't have worried, from the first time he went into the Jumperoo he loved it!

At first, he just rocked a little and played with the toys that are attached - they are bright and colourful and easily grabbed - after he had been in a couple of times and realised he could "bounce" there was no stopping him! Fabulous reaction and full of smiles and laughter, it was an obvious hit!

There are lights, sounds and music all to entertain, the seat moves round 360* so little one can see all around and reach the toys that are well spaced, and best of all the fabric seat is removable so can be washed if it gets a little grubby from so much use.

One handy tip when Daniel started rolling around and I needed a quick trip to the loo, I put him in the Jumperoo so I knew he would be safe when I came back rather than rolling around and getting into mischief!

There are three different height adjustments, so as little one grows the Jumperoo grows with them

I can't think of anything bad to say, except it is a little bulky and so needs space to store/use but its well worth moving the furniture around a little to fit it in...

Prices range, its about £80 for a new Jumperoo but you can get them second hand for around £40, if you are thinking about getting one but not sure, go for it, your little one will love it...

Here's a link to the Fisherprice website for the "official" bit (we had the Rainforest one which isn't shown)
Absolutely agree 100%. Our twins LOVED theirs - also the Rainforest - and it made my life a lot easier. It does fold in on itself so it can be stored at the side of a room. --Mad Margaret (talk) 18:22, 10 May 2013 (UTC)
This has got to be the best money we have ever spent,They aren't cheap by far, but it is worth every penny to give your arm's a break.
My daughter absolutely loved hers, she would bouncy as hard as possible, play with all the toys that surround it and just giggle for hours.----Kerryflump (talk) 03:00, 11 May 2013 (UTC)

We have visited Flamingo Land several times and have always enjoyed our time there, there is so much to do and see.

There are rides for all ages, so if it's the Cup and Saucers or the Big Dipper you like I'm sure there will be something here for you. If you're more like me, and don't really like the rides, then there is still much more to do.

There are lots of animals (monkeys, tigers, giraffes), a Bird House and my all time favourite animal ever, the hippos.
The muddy ducks park is lovely for smaller children, lots of them waddling around, whilst you enjoy a slow ride round on the fun sized train.

During the day they have lots of entertainment for the kids. Postman Pat has his own show and our son loved it,he kept shouting for "popat" all day long. They have little shows around the site like tribal acts, clowns and the famous Seal Show.

Take some spare clothing with you as there is a massive wet water area, with jets and fountains all coming up out of the floor. We got absolutely drenched and our son loved every minute of it - shooting daddy with big water guns is always fun.

With plenty of places to eat and drink, there are lots of choices available. Food bought on the site is likely to be more expensive, so you would be better off taking a picnic. We leave ours in the car until dinner time, saves carrying it around then I send out the hubby, whilst we find a nice spot on the big green grassed area near to the little train ride station.

If you know you're going in advance, there are nearly always some great vouchers on Ebay (3 for 2).

Kerryflump: /* Tip From My Physiotherapist */

Oh, how I wish I followed the advice given to me about doing these easy daily exercises. It is because of this that I can tell you how important they really are, as I'm currently receiving physiotherapy for a slight prolapse and weakened pelvic floor muscles.

What is Your Pelvic Floor?
Your pelvic floor is made up of a sling of muscles, ligaments and tissue. It runs from your pubic bone to the base of your spine.

What Does It Do
Your pelvic floor is there to support your bladder, bowel and uterus (womb).

It gives control over when you empty your bladder and bowels.

What Affects Your Pelvic Floor During Birth
After nine months of pregnancy and carrying all that weight on your pelvic floor it then has to stretch considerably for the birth. There are a few reasons why you may overstretch your pelvic muscles during birth.

* Pushing for a long time.
* A big head.
* A tear.
* A forceps delivery.

When To Start Your Exercises
As soon as you feel you can. It maybe the last thing you want to do, but this can aid you in your recovery.
Pelvic floor exercises after birth can increase the blood flow to the perineum and this will help to reduce and bruising and swelling, it will also help to heal any tears and strengthen any over stretched skin too. It is important to start them as soon as you can to help strengthen the support it gives to your bladder and bowels, to prevent any leakage.

How To Do These Exercises
Breath in as normal and when you breath out, pull up your pelvic floor muscles as if you were holding your wee or wind. Hold this for about 5 seconds to begin with and increase to 10 seconds when this is easily achieved. You should aim to do these 5 times a day in sets of ten contractions each time, please remember to breath normally.

If you do have any problems with your pelvic floor support then please consult your GP, but remember that some leakage is common after birth. You will be referred to a physiotherapist or continence nurse to assess your situation.

I was always told to pull in the muscles in order. So the anal, vaginal and then the ones at the front (urethra). It is quite useful to be able to separate them thus. Once all are being tightened then hold for 10 seconds or longer.

Tip From My Physiotherapist
My loverly Physio gave me this advice this week, And it really works ( It did for me ).

When you get a sudden urge to urinate, Or think you may get a little leakage before getting to the toilet. Place your finger tightly against the upper part of your Philtrum( Just under your nostril). This area is a pressure point and works on your bladder. Hold it until the urge to urinate has gone.

* A big head.
* A tear.
* A forceps delivery.

My loverly Physio gave me this advice this week, and it really works ( or it did for me ).

When you get a sudden urge to urinate, or think you may get a little leakage before getting to the toilet. Place your finger tightly against the upper part of your Philtrum( just under your nostril). This are is a pressure point and works on your bladder. Hold it until the urge to urinate has gone.

My first born was born prematurely, at 34 weeks; which compared to some is nothing I know, but still a worrying time for most.
The story of his birth can be found in the Birth section / KERRY'SBIRTHSTORY, But I will tell you here a bit about after he was born.

When he was first born he was soon whisked off to the NICU, to be checked over. At the time the midwives felt he was fine and healthy, but they still had to check due to his gestational age.

It was at least two hours after he was born before I could go to see him on the unit, due to sorting me out and waiting for my jelly legs to return.

When we got there he seemed so small. That's when it hit home he shouldn't be here yet. The room was dark with lots of blue lighting to just give you enough to see your way around. There were lots of machines and lots of bleeps and buzzers going off in all directions, but thankfully none of them had been attached to our son.

We were lucky that being born at 34 weeks gave him a very good chance of full recovery. So they checked him out and all was fine. They did have to give him a little glucose to up his sugars and an extra blanket and hat to keep him warm, but that was it.

He stayed in the NICU for only 12 hours before been transferred to SCBU which was on the main Maternity Unit.
Over the next day or so we were shown how to feed our son through his feeding tube and also how to encourage the reflex action of the tongue in order for him to start feeding from a bottle. The reflex action doesn't mature in gestation until 35 weeks so this was their main concern for our son.

Over the next few days he developed jaundice and became quite unwell in himself, refusing feeds and just sleeping as he didn't have the energy for it at all. He was placed on a billie-board with uv lights to reduce the effects of the build up of bilirubin in his bloodstream. He continued this treatment for about 48 hours. After lots of heel prick blood tests, they said he was back to a healthy level. The yellowing of his eye and the yellow/red tone of his skin slowly went away over the next couple of weeks.

After only seven days in hospital our son and myself were allowed home. We had to give him small but regular feeds to help build the strength of his sucking action but that was it. He was given a clean bill of health.

So my experience with NICU and SCBU was really not that bad compared to so many other parents and babies. And for those people I'm sending you a big hug and best wishes for a healthy bright future.
