It’s not the easiest place to fine and badly signposted but once there it is lovely.

It was June and the weather was lovely (makes a difference), Meredith absolutely loved the animals of course and enjoyed holding the rabbits and feeding the lambs, she wasn’t very keen on the huge peacock that was squawking.

There were several play areas outside that were all well maintained and bright, there’s the old bus that you can go in as well (you can have your picnic on it).
Inside was a clean and friendly café that served lovely home baking, the toilets where clean and spacious which is always good if you have a pram or buggy with you.

There’s the soft play area also, lots to do inside and out, we spent about 5 hours there and finished off the day with Chris and Meredith going on a Tractor and trailer ride around the park ( this costs extra)

The cost of entry was:
£5.80 per Adult
£4.80 per Child
£19.00 for a Family ticket (2 adults & 2 Children)
Under 1’s go Free
£4.80 seniors

Teresal's View
Sex after Children
Well I never thought I would ever be having sex again after the birth of my daughter, I bled a lot and for a long time after so wasn’t even a possibility at first, once things settled down I think we had gotten into a bit of a rut and found it difficult to get started again.

We were constantly tired and just seemed to fall into bed at the end of each day and go to sleep, sleep at that time was far more important than anything else. My husband and I were the same so it wasn’t as though one wanted sex and the other wasn’t.

After several months (probably 3 months) our daughter was in more of a routine and going to bed at 6.30pm, this was giving us more time just as a couple and the affection started to come back, the odd cuddle on the sofa or a quick kiss on the way past but it was probably another month before we started having sex again, it did feel like an effort at first but once I got into it, it was fine.

I wouldn’t say we were doing it regularly at all just as and when we got time or could be bothered, our daughter has now just turned 3 and I wouldn’t say that even now we have sex regularly but we do make time for each other and sometimes it’s just nice to cuddle up together.

I suppose the outcome of this is that there is no right or wrong in having sex after children as long as you as a couple are happy with it. I certainly wouldn’t have been happy if my husband had been putting pressure on my after the birth.

Enjoy some special time as a couple and things will happen naturally.

Teresal's Caesarean Story
Well I have pondered with this story for some time now, My Caesarean wasn’t planned at all so have struggled with how or what to write, I will try and explain it best I can.

Quick brief update on my birth story (full one on another thread), I was being induced and whilst on the monitor baby’s heartbeat dropped and all hell broke loose.

I can remember being told in my delivery room that I was going for a Caesarean and that when I got into theatre I would be given an Epidural, Nothing was really sinking in at the time, they could have been telling me I was losing my leg and I would have agreed.
As I was lying on the bed with a consultant doing an internal examination I was having Cannula’s put into each hand, then it was time to move onto theatre.
On the way to theatre it was decided by the consultant that they would just give me a general anaesthetic as that would be quicker than waiting for the epidural to work.

In the theatre room was very surreal, anaesthetist at my head, two nurses down below with my feet in stirrups, consultant at my side and I think two nurses from special care unit at the resuscitation machine, there were other people in the room but I don’t know who or why they were there (could have been cleaners for all I cared at this stage), everything was calm and very regimented, everyone knew what their particular job was and they were doing it.

I, on the other hand was crying and shaking, I can remember being very scared and struggled to breath, the anaesthetist was telling me to breath.
I was very quickly put to sleep (what a lovely feeling that is, wish I could go to sleep like that every night) and to await the outcome.

After the surgery I had a cut just above my bikini line (as if I’ve worn one of them) with a drainage tube coming out of it.

I was taken into recovery were I was met by my husband and my beautiful healthy daughter; I was in recovery for about an hour before being moved onto the maternity ward.

My experience will be very different to someone who was having a planned Caesarean or even someone who was having an emergency with an epidural, they will be able to explain what happens during the actual procedure, I have no clue at what happened during that time, maybe that was a good thing for me as I could no longer panic at every sound, would on the other hand have been nice to have heard Meredith’s first cry (I have heard plenty since then though).

Some things to think about after a Caesarean section
The one main thing I would say about a Caesarean section is always remember that it is major abdominal surgery.
It is said that it can take up to six weeks to heal from a Caesarean section, so don’t expect to be up and running in a few days.

Taking Medication
Straight after my emergency Caesarean section I was hooked up to a syringe driver full of morphine, personally I didn’t like the feel of it so asked after about two hours to have it removed. I was then given Co-codamol, as I’m not very good at taking painkillers, again I felt very spaced out and not in control of myself and certainly not capable of looking after my precious daughter safely.

On the second day I refused Co-codamol, but accepted Paracetamol as I was having the drainage tube removed and figured that it might actually hurt a lot (which unfortunately it did, actually made my toes curl).

I wouldn’t say I was in a lot of pain more uncomfortable, the weather was hot and with the fold of my flabby tummy going over the incision it wasn’t comfortable so I continued with Paracetamol.

I carried on taking that for a further two days then once I went home the hospital prescribed Co-codamol (why after I refused it I don’t know), we stopped and bought Paracetamol so that I had some should I need it.

Once home I didn’t take them regularly, but more at bedtime because it was uncomfortable by then, but after about a week I had stopped altogether.
Please don’t think I am being brave about the pain but I just didn’t need them and that doesn’t mean that others shouldn’t take the Morphine after surgery or reduce to Co-codamol. Personally, I just didn’t need them.

Going to the toilet
Yes a Caesarean can and does affect your bodily functions, I struggled to even pass urine. A nurse brought me a straw to blow in while I was trying to go and I thought she was crazy, I mean what was that supposed to do (it did make me laugh while I was doing it), but seemingly it helps to stimulate the right muscles or maybe it was just me laughing that made me go.

Ahh the wind, well what can I say about that, yep there was plenty of it and at rather embarrassing times, but I suppose the nurses have heard it all before. I apologised constantly to them.

As for the bowels, yes it was painful and I was scared in case I burst myself open but surprisingly that never happened. It can be difficult and some ladies may well need to be prescribed medication to help them go more easily.

Getting up the stairs
I think stairs were a bit of a fear for me once I got home, it was painful getting up. One of the midwives that visited suggested walking up backwards as you are less inclined to lean, I thought oh great maybe less inclined to lean but I will probably end up falling down. I did give it a go, but was very tense at the thought of falling so it didn’t really help me.

Keeping active
You will probably feel that it’s the last thing you want to do BUT you must keep moving and by moving I don’t mean doing the housework or exercise I mean walking around slowly and carefully. It will stop things ceasing up and help a lot with recovery.

Keeping the incision clean
My darling husband was given this task, he cleaned my incision twice a day with cooled boiled water and cotton wool, the weather was hot and again my flabby tummy was making it sweaty so he cut up a muslin and placed it across the incision to soak up any sweat/fluid.
Six months after my caesarean section my incision was not only healed you couldn’t even see where it was.

After the surgery I was given the very lovely and sexy white stockings to wear, there was no way I could do this myself, so yet again this job was given to Chris, yes they are a nightmare to put on but make sure your legs are properly dry and I put talc on my legs to make them slide on easier and helped with overheating. I had to wear these for six weeks along with injecting myself once a day to help prevent blood clots.

I was also given Iron tablets to take as I had lost a bit of blood during surgery, they are not plesant at all and the end result isn't nice either, very black sticky poo (sorry, it isn't nice) but for the sake of getting my iron levels back up I took them for six weeks as well.

I was back to driving after four weeks (with my GP’s blessing) and I think due to being practical and listening to my body I healed really well and quickly.

On looking back I didn't need all that with me at one time, Chris could have brought things in as I needed them, we could have left a bag in the car.

I would advice to have your bag ready by the time you get to 34 weeks, you just never know. Have it somewhere were it easy to grab on your way out the door.

My bag was packed and unpacked so many times it was unreal.
As for the bowels, yes it was painful and I was scared in case I burst myself open but surprisingly that never happened, it can be difficult and some ladies may well need to be prescribed medication to help them go more easily.

Getting up the stairs
I think stairs were a bit of a fear for me once I got home, it was painful getting up, one of the midwives that visited suggested walking up backwards as you are less inclined to lean, I thought oh great maybe less inclined to lean but I will probably end up falling down, I did give it a go but was very tense at the thought of falling so it didn’t really help me.

Keeping active
You will probably feel that it’s the last thing you want to do BUT you must keep moving and by moving I don’t mean doing the housework or exercise I mean walking around slowly and carefully, it will stop things ceasing up and help a lot with recovery.

I was back to driving after four weeks (with my GP’s blessing) and I think due to being practical and listening to my body I healed really well and quickly.

My Pregnancy Story:

After two rounds of IVF using Donor sperm we had finally got our positive result, overjoyed does not even begin to describe how we were feeling.

/Teresal's Story My IVF story can be found here

Bringing a child into the world is one of the most rewarding things you will ever do. It could also be one of the most life changing experiences you will ever have. Throughout your pregnancy you will go through all sorts of physical and emotional changes as you and your body prepare for the arrival of your little bundle of joy. It is a magical time.

On the 12th November 2009 we had three embryos transferred (graded “8C3-3, 8C3-2 and 6C3-2”) and were basically told not to get our hopes up as these embryos where not the best and a bit “grainy” (whatever that meant), anyway we proved them wrong when we tested at home with the good old Clear Blue Digital Pregnancy test on the 23rd November 2009, we could not believe what we were seeing, yes it really said pregnant, after the initial tears of joy the shock settled in and the reality was the we could actually have anything from one child to three (or six after some wise person indicated that they could divide) inside me.

We travelled to our clinic on the 26th November 2009 to get a blood test done and then had to come home and await the phone call, even though we had done the test ourselves we now had the awful dread that it wasn’t correct and that the clinic would phone and say sorry it’s a negative, god how that day dragged, at 3.06pm the phone rang and they confirmed that we had a positive and it was a good strong result.

We had to then wait (again) another three weeks for my scan, which would make me 7 weeks exactly, every day was a drag but a day closer to the scan.

The 17th December 2009 eventually came, we were extremely nervous on that drive to the clinic that morning, I felt so sick with worry.

We were taken into the scan room where I was given an internal scan, after the sonographer had a good look she pointed to a little blob and said there it is and there is only the one, relief to see my blob and even more that there was only the one, the smile on our faces was unreal, she then hit a button and the sound was amazing thump thump thump, there that’s your baby you can hear, I’m afraid that’s when I totally lost it and the tears came and they came hard, I was sobbing with such joy, I wanted to hear that sound every minute of every day until he/she arrived, unfortunately that wasn’t going to be the case and we were given a picture and lots if congratulations and sent on our way.

The day after the scan I had made an appointment to see my GP to get it made all official, she was so pleased for us (and probably glad that she was eventually seeing the back of me) and she made the arrangements to contact the midwife for our booking in appointment.

My midwife visited the house on the 30th December 2009 to do our booking in appointment, lots of paperwork to fill in; Chris and I had decided to let them know that we had used donor sperm so that they would know that any medical conditions in the future could not be related to him.

The 5th January 2010 we had our next scan, I was then 10 weeks pregnant, no morning sickness, in fact apart from the cold I felt fine, no symptoms at all of being pregnant, the scan was great and we could now see that now it wasn’t just a blob it was in fact a baby (maybe more like a tadpole), all fine with baby, measurements where spot on, since I was very nervous with this pregnancy the midwife arranged another scan in four weeks.

The weeks passed slowly, I had started to have regular nosebleeds and I was a bit concerned, I spoke to my midwife who reassured that this is quite common in early pregnancy due to something with the placenta pumping the blood but she did suggest seeing my GP to get some blood taken to rule out that I wasn’t becoming anaemic. I was also given the swine flu injection this week.

The 2nd February eventually arrived and off we went for another scan, yet again I was full of cold but otherwise all was fine, the nosebleeds had eased off and thankfully I wasn’t anaemic. Scan went fine; baby definitely a baby now and continued to measure fine.

On week sixteen I had more bloods taken to check for Downs Syndrome, Spina Bifida and Williams Syndrome, quite nervous about this due to my age (41), I also heard the heartbeat, this sound will always be the best sound in the world and looking back I wish that I had taped it as a momento for the future.

Week seventeen (23rd February 2010) our blood results came back and we are high risk for Downs Syndrome, the national average is 1-88 and we were 1-119 this is considered high risk and we have been scheduled for another scan tomorrow and to discuss options with our consultant.

24th February 2010, dreaded scan day, after a sleepless night we arrived at the hospital very scared, the scan went well and our consultant could not see any visible signs of Downs Syndrome. We had already made the decision before we arrived that we wouldn’t have the amniocentesis done as the risk of miscarriage is 1-100 and even if the result was positive for Downs Syndrome then we would never terminate anyway so what was the point in risking a miscarriage.

24th March 2010, detailed scan day, this was the one where we would get good pictures of our baby, very excited at this prospect. This scan was really good until the sonographer said that she thought she could see a problem with the kidneys (a condition called Antenatal Detected Renal Pyelectasis) http://www.wikimum.co.uk/index.php?title=Antenatally_Detected_Pyelectasis, we were taken into a room to await the consultant, he explained that there could be another reason that the kidneys didn’t look quite right and that could be that baby was either due to have a wee or in the process of doing a wee, we are to be scanned again at 34 weeks (seems such a long time away, I mean 14 weeks that’s a lifetime isn’t it).

At 22 weeks I was having a lot of pain in my left side and across the top of my tummy, phoned the midwife and was sent to the maternity assessment unit to get checked over, baby was fine, heart beating away quite happily (140bpm), the pain is probably caused by muscles stretching and possibly me carrying hoover upstairs and hovering the whole house opps.

Week 23, yet more drama here, I have a urine infection and have been feeling absolutely rubbish, I am exhausted with having to constantly go to the toilet, not been given antibiotics but have to drink loads to flush it out.

Week 24, whhhhoooopppppy I have at last felt this baby move, very gentle and a weird sensation but defiantly movements, a bit like butterflies and some popping bubbles. I am so happy.

Week 26, Chris has finally felt the baby kick, this baby is a tinker, it could be doing a dance in there but as soon as Chris puts his hand on my belly it would just stop, quite funny but very nice for him to actually feel it at last.

Week 34, the dreaded scan to see how the baby’s kidneys are now, in fact I haven’t really thought much about it for a while, been far too busy decorating the nursery and buying equipment and clothes. The scan was however brilliant, there was no evidence of anything being wrong with the kidneys, we are very happy parents indeed, was lovely to see baby again.

Week 37, after my midwife check they now thing baby is breech, however the following day whilst drinking a cup of tea there was a huge movement in my belly (actually felt sick) and baby has definitely turned.

Week 38, scan with consultant; baby is definitely head down, not engaged but down, that’s heading the right way for me.

Week 40, my actual due date 2nd August 2010, seen my consultant today and he has decided that I am very low in amniotic fluid and wants me induced on the 4th August 2010.

This story continues in my birth story http://www.wikimum.co.uk/index.php?title=Teresal%27s_Birth_Story, I hope I haven’t bored you to death reading this.

This scan was really good until the sonographer said that she thought she could see a problem with the kidneys (a condition called Antenatal Detected Renal Pyelectasis) link to Antenatally Detected Pyelectasis, we were taken into a room to await the consultant, he explained that there could be another reason that the kidneys didn’t look quite right and that could be that baby was either due to have a wee or in the process of doing a wee, we are to be scanned again at 34 weeks (seems such a long time away, I mean 14 weeks that’s a lifetime isn’t it).

This story continues in my birth story, I hope I haven’t bored you to death reading this.

Plain and simple, its probably the best "toy" we bought for our son when he was younger...

The age range is advised from 6 months to 15 months or a weight of 11kgs and height of 85cms.

We bought ours second hand for £45 and we were a little sceptical as to how much it would be used, but we shouldn't have worried, from the first time he went into the Jumperoo he loved it!

At first, he just rocked a little and played with the toys that are attached - they are bright and colourful and easily grabbed - after he had been in a couple of times and realised he could "bounce" there was no stopping him! Fabulous reaction and full of smiles and laughter, it was an obvious hit!

There are lights, sounds and music all to entertain, the seat moves round 360* so little one can see all around and reach the toys that are well spaced, and best of all the fabric seat is removable so can be washed if it gets a little grubby from so much use.

One handy tip when Daniel started rolling around and I needed a quick trip to the loo, I put him in the Jumperoo so I knew he would be safe when I came back rather than rolling around and getting into mischief!

There are three different height adjustments, so as little one grows the Jumperoo grows with them

I can't think of anything bad to say, except it is a little bulky and so needs space to store/use but its well worth moving the furniture around a little to fit it in...

Prices range, its about £80 for a new Jumperoo but you can get them second hand for around £40, if you are thinking about getting one but not sure, go for it, your little one will love it...

My Pregnancy Story:

After two rounds of IVF using Donor sperm we had finally got our positive result, overjoyed does not even begin to describe how we were feeling.

Our IVF story is in another thread.

This story continues in my birth story, I hope I haven’t bored you to death reading this.

This condition was detected at our 20 week scan, although it was a shock at the time at a further scan at 34 weeks we were then told that our babies kidneys where fine.

There are several reasons that this condition can be mixed up with something else, we were told that it can look like this condition when the baby is having a wee at the time of the scan or getting ready to have a wee.

What is Antenatally Detected Renal Pyelectasis (ADRP)
This is where the tubes that drain urine from the kidneys (renal pelvis) are more swollen than usual.

How is it detected
ADRP is seen during ultrasound scanning during pregnancy, and can be found from 20 weeks. The size of the renal pelvis can be measured and compared to normal sizes.

What causes it?
In many cases there is no abnormality, the measurements are just larger than normal, and will return to normal size after birth.

In some babies there is a weakness of the valve that stops urine going back up the ureters from the bladder. This is known as Vesicoureteric reflux (VUR).

Rarely, babies may have a blockage at the junction of the ureters and the renal pelvis. This is known as pelviureteric junction obstruction (PUJ obstruction),

What will happen after my baby is born?
The paediatrician will request an ultrasound scan of your baby. This may be done locally or at your nearest children's hospital depending on your area (it is like the scan you had when you where pregnant).

The appointment will be sent out to yoour house within the first two months. The scan will look at the kidneys in greater detail, and remeasure the renal pelvis (the area that was swollen before).

When will you get a result?
You will be given an appointment to go back to the paediatric clinic within two weeks of the scan.

What will happen after this?
This depends on the size of the swelling seen in the womb, the measurements made on the scan and how well your baby has been. If all is well with your baby and the kidney swelling is better or unchanged they will simply arrange a second scan at six months of age for a final check. This is the case in most babies, a small number of babies with increasing swelling will need to organise a different type of scan called DMSA scan.

What is a DMSA scan?
This test is used to show how well the kidneys are working. It will require a cannula ("drip") to be inserted, usually into the back of the hand. A very mild radioactive dye is injected which goes through the kidneys and pictures are taken a short while later.

What next?
If this is required you will have another clinic appointment with the results. Depending on the results it may be that further action is not needed other than periodic outpatient appointments with an ultrascan scan. In some babies they will require further input from a paediatric kidney specialist team. This will be fully explained at the clinic.

Is there anything you should be looking out for or do differently?
Your baby should be treated entirely normally. It is very important to ask for medical help early if your baby has a fever or is unwell so that a urine sample can be checked for an infection. \early treatment with a course of antibiotics is important if this is positive.

My Pregnancy Story:

After two rounds of IVF using Donor sperm we had finally got our positive result, overjoyed does not even begin to describe how we were feeling.

Our IVF story is in another thread.

This scan was really good until the sonographer said that she thought she could see a problem with the kidneys (a condition called Antenatal Detected Renal Pyelectasis), we were taken into a room to await the consultant, he explained that there could be another reason that the kidneys didn’t look quite right and that could be that baby was either due to have a wee or in the process of doing a wee, we are to be scanned again at 34 weeks (seems such a long time away, I mean 14 weeks that’s a lifetime isn’t it).

Hi, Well what can I say about me before parenthood, to be honest it's a struggle to even remember that far back.

I live in a very small village in the Scottish borders, it's very scenic which is probably something I never appreciated when I was young.

I have had a varied job history, I have worked in factories, been a Nanny, worked in a Childrens home, adults with spinal injuries and finally the last ten years I have worked with the elderly, either in the community or in care homes, I enjoy this type of work and especially specialised in Dentia care.

I moved from my quiet village to Glasgow in 2003 and met Chris, things moved on and we fell in love, in 2006 I had decided that I had had enough of the city and was becoming very homesick so we moved back to my home village, this has been the best decision for us and even though Chris has been born and bfeed in the city he would never leave the country now.

We enjoyed our lives before being parents and would take off at the drop of a hat for weekends away and eating out, however we enjoy our lives even more now, still have weekends away and eating out has to be earlier in the evening.

We probably lead a very quiet life compared to others, our daughter is nearly three and we have yet to leave her to have an evening on our own, at the moment we both feel we are not ready to leave her with anybody, I know the day will come when she wants to go for a sleepover but until that day she stays nice and safe with us.

We used the old fashioned Terry Towelling squares, with nappy pin and plastic pants. We used these a lot through the day but we did use disposable nappies through the night more for convenience and easier for Chris (husband) to use

Reasons we used them:

* Value for money

* Better for the environment

* Less chemicals on baby's bottom

Negatives for using them:

* Washing and drying them

Right, my labour story....

Wednesday 4th August 2010
I was taken into Hospital on Wednesday for induction, arrived at the hospital at 8am was checked in and given the slow release Pessary (Proress) at about 8.30am. I had observations done and we were fine and were then monitored every hour through the day.

At about 9pm, on one of my many trips to the loo the Pessary came out and because it was a slow release they couldn’t put another in because they didn’t know how much had been absorbed so I was told that I would be started off again on the Thursday morning. I was having lots of backache and some contractions, but nothing significant to think I was in labour.

Chris went home at about 10pm and I had a nice bath and tried to get some sleep.

Thursday 5th August 2010
I was up at 6am had another bath and waited for the day to begin.

The Midwife came in at 8am to let me know that things wouldn’t be happening that morning, the labour ward was packed with labouring women and they had 2 elective sections (one lady waiting to be induced was sent home and given another day).

At 5pm we were told that NOTHING would be happening at all that day but we would be priority on the Friday morning and they would put a drip in and get things moving, I was really upset because I felt that everything that had been done on Wednesday was a waste of time.

Got a Doctors pass and went out with Chris for my tea (that was nice). At 8pm (nightshift came on) I was told that they wouldn’t use the drip because it is too harsh when I’m not in proper labour and could cause problems and that I would be given a Prostaglandin tablet instead. After a very long day we just had to accept that tomorrow was another day and hope that nothing urgent came in and stopped us from getting started so we could meet our precious baby. Very little sleep and lots of tea, ohh yes and more baths (anything to pass the time).

Friday 6th August 2010
The Midwife came in at about 8am and did her examination and put baby on the monitor to do a trace before administering tablet, baby quite sleepy so had to have a glass of cold water and move onto left side to get him/her moving which he/she did, all was fine baby active again. The tablet was inserted at 8.30am and again on continuous monitoring. The midwife was in and out the room, but I was watching the monitor because baby was jumping about and knocking the CTG off.

I got concerned when the heartbeat was going down to 64/62 beats and not coming back up again but wasn’t sure if it was because he/she was moving around so much (this had happened many times before) but pressed the buzzer (8.58am) anyway. All I can say and remember is that total mayhem erupted, the emergency button was being pressed and Drs, Consultants and Midwives were running around everywhere and needles and masks were being stuck into and on me.

I was panicking and crying because I didn’t know what was going on except I was being taken to theatre straight away and all I wanted was Chris. At 9.10am someone went to phone him as I was being hurled towards theatre - there were people everywhere. I knew this must be bad because I wasn’t being told anything at all apart from move an arm here or breathe deeply, I remember the consultant rubbing my cheek saying “Right, that’s us ready to put you to sleep.” My reply was “please don’t let my baby die” and I could see in his face he wasn’t promising anything.

The next thing I knew was being wheeled into recovery and being told you have a wee girl and Chris walking towards me crying and smiling, carrying a tiny bundle. I knew at that point she was fine.

To cut a very long story (am sure you are all bored by now) Meredith Emma was born at 9.26am on the 6th August 2010, weighing 6lb exactly, she is beautiful (I know I am biased) very petite and very healthy, she passed all her tests so I was very pleased.

I hope that hasn’t been too traumatic for anyone, but really it all happened so quickly and I know other couples that have been through far worse than us. At the end of the day we got our healthy baby who didn’t need any assistance after birth and for that I am thankful.

Teresal:

Right, where to start? My name is Teresa (good start) and here’s my story….

In August 2003 I met Chris. It was quite casual at the start, but in January 2004 we chatted and decided that we actually did quite like each other and maybe we should give this relationship thing a go. I was 34 and Chris was 30 (yes, yes he’s my toyboy) and I had just about given up on meeting that “special somebody”.

In Feb 2005 we decided to move in together (huge decision for me and very scary) to see how we actually got on with Chris not being able to run to his house and after a few months we chatted about having children. It has always been my dream to be a Mummy and as time was ticking by we thought we better get on with it! But every month the same damned period arrived bang on time (never gave me any chance to think I might be pregnant!).

In April 2006 we moved from Glasgow back to my hometown in the Borders. So I had a quick chat with my new Doctor about trying for a baby. She decided that due to my age that maybe we should just tell the odd white lie and get on and do some tests. All came back fine for me so the attention switched to Chris. After several sperm samples (me cuddling the pot to keep it warm till we got to the clinic) it was confirmed that Chris had no live sperm(Azoospermia) and that our only chance of having a baby would be to do IVF with Donor sperm. It was like being slapped in the face with a wet fish; Chris seemed to accept it quicker than I did, but I grieved for the child that we would never make together.

We were referred to our local fertility clinic where I was given scans, more blood tests and an HSG (Hysterosalpingogram). Since they didn’t deal with IVF we were then re referred to the Glasgow Royal Infirmary. Our first appointment at the Assisted Conception Unit (now 2008) was very scary and yes more blood tests . We were tested for every STI you can think of and I had my AMH (anti-mullerian hormone ) done (5.4). We were then told that there was a shortage of Donor Sperm in Scotland and we would be put on the waiting list. Now all we could do was wait (something I’m not good at).

In 2009, we decided to borrow the money to go to a private clinic. After searching many clinics we decided on the Nuffield in Glasgow. Following an initial consultation, we started our first attempt in April 2009, but unfortunately it was abandoned at the first blood test, as my Oestrogen levels were too high. We were absolutely gutted, to say the least and as there was no reason as to why it had happened we just had to wait till my next period to try again. How that month dragged! We started again in the May, all seemed to go well and I had 2 grade A/B embryos replaced. Sadly, 3 days before our test date I started bleeding. I cannot really describe how we actually felt at that time, it was a total blur and even now I can’t really remember how I was. We knew that we couldn’t afford to try again privately so we felt that that was it for us and we were going to be childless forever. We needed time to grieve.

After about 2 months I seemed to get a sudden gush of anger and wrote to my local PCT and explained about the length of time we had waited to have our treatment and how ridiculous it all was. After about 3 weeks I received a letter informing us that they agreed that we had been treated badly and in fact due to an administration error we had been removed from all waiting lists in Glasgow! So they offered to actually pay for us to go to a private clinic in Glasgow.

Our first meeting at the GCRM was lovely, very relaxed, and we left that day with all the drugs I would need. So the journey started again. I started taking my drugs in the September and had 3 decent grade embryos replaced (I could have 3 because I was over 40). 2 days before my test date I couldn’t wait any longer and tested. Whoopppy!!! It was a big fat positive! But we still had another 2 weeks to wait till the scan. Chris was now having kittens that all 3 embryos had taken and was looking at people carriers and mini buses just in case (poor soul, somebody said that they could even divide and we might end up with 6). Thankfully, there was only one beautiful heartbeat. Seeing and hearing that for the first time was very emotional and still is when I think about it.

My pregnancy went reasonably well and my labour was not great, but I will keep that for another time. Our precious, beautiful daughter, Meredith Emma was born on the 6th August 2010, weighing 6lb and our world is complete.

Loads more stories to tell from having a difficult delivery, sleepless nights, right through to the terrible twos and now nearly the horrendous threes.
I hope you have enjoyed our story.

Croup
We were unfortunate earlier this year to see our daughter suffer from Croup. It is very scary for any parent to watch their child gasping for breath.

Our child is very healthy and very rarely suffers any illness so to see her like this made us realise that as parents some things are out of our control.

What is Croup?
Croup is the common name for a condition called Larnyngotracheitis. This is an infection of the voice box (Larynx) and the main airway to the lungs (Trachea). The infection causes the upper airway to swell which can sometimes make it more difficult to breathe. Very occasionally the airway can swell so much that emergency treatment is required.

Who gets Croup?
Croup usually affects children between 6 months and 6 years. It is possible for the children older than 6 years to develop it but this is much less common.

Symptoms of Croup
Symptoms are usually acute and most severe during the first 3 days and then ease off as your child fights the virus.
In most cases children with viral Croup recover after a few days and do not require medical treatment.

COUGH Usually harsh and “barking”, this cough is due to the inflammation and swelling of the vocal cords and may last a further week.

BREATHING SYMPTOMS A “Stridor”, which is the noise you may hear when your child breathes in and is due to the narrowing of the airway by inflammation and swelling.

OTHER SYMPTOMS Runny nose, hoarse voice, sore throat, fever and general aches and pains.

Symptoms are often worse at night particularly the cough and stridor.

TREATMENT
Treatment depends on the severity of symptoms. Young children find Croup distressing so it will help if you sit them upright to enable them to breathe more easily and provide a calm, restful environment.

HOME TREATMENTS
Avoid all smoky environments.
Sit them in a steamy bathroom, use a humidifier in the room or dry your washing over a radiator.
Give Paracetamol or Ibuprofen for sore throat/fever.
Try to get your child to rest as much as possible.

GP & HOSPITAL TREATMENTS
A Steroid called “Dexamethasone” may be given orally which should reduce swelling and inflammation of the airway. This may be given for another couple of days.
If in hospital, your child will be monitored overnight/day.
If the Croup is more severe the “Adrenaline” or a steroid called “Budesonide” may also be required. These are given via an oxygen nebuliser (like a space mask)

WHAT TO DO AFTER DISCHARGE FROM HOSPITAL
Encourage oral fluids to maintain hydration and ease a sore throat (avoid just water).
Administer Paracetamol or Ibuprofen as needed.

WHEN TO SEEK FURTHER HELP
•	The Stridor returns.
•	Drooling from the mouth and unable to swallow.
•	Blueness around the mouth.

Always seek medical advice or call 999 for any type of breathing emergency.

Meredith was 2 years 7 months when she had Croup, she hadn’t been ill throughout the day and went to bed as normal but woke a few hours later coughing, we did try the steamy bathroom before I called NHS24 (Scotland) for advice.

They decided that we needed an ambulance and so we were admitted to hospital (Children’s Ward at the Cumberland Infirmary in Carlisle) where she was given Paracetamol and the steroid Dexamethasone.

We were kept in overnight for observation and discharged at lunchtime the next day. Meredith had to have a further dose of the steroid that night but fortunately that was all she needed.

It probably took her about a week to fully recover from her ordeal, she does however still ask to go back to hospital because she liked the playroom there, and I on the other hand would like to never see it again.
