Rene Pankratz is a developer and father who has created four elegantly simple Android apps to help his own daughter learn how to identify shapes (Learning Shapes for Kids), colours (Learning Colors for Kids), letters (Learning Letters for Kids) and the numbers 0-20 (Learning Numbers for Kids).

Learning Colors for Kids shows 4 coloured rectangles covering a quarter of the screen each. A voice with a slight German accent (Rene Pankratz himself) asks the child to "touch the colour blue". If the wrong colour is touched, an alarm sounds and Rene says "Oh, you have touched the colour green... Try again.". It includes gold and silver (depicted by a glossy shine) and black and white.

These wonderfully simple games, which work just as well on an Android smartphone as a tablet have very quickly drilled our children to associate spoken words with colors, shapes, numbers and letters. I'm surprised how much they enjoy playing these games given their simplicity, but perhaps that's part of the attraction.

These apps have no on-screen adds to divert young fingers to costly purchases, they ask for no suspicious permissions and they are completely free. You really can't go wrong, so download them today!
